Caramelized Onion Apple Cheddar (Printable)

Sweet onions, crisp apples, and melted cheddar layered on golden buttery bread for a savory delight.

# Components:

→ Caramelized Onions

01 - 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
02 - 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
03 - 1 teaspoon olive oil
04 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
05 - 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)

→ Sandwich

06 - 4 slices sourdough or country bread
07 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
08 - 1 medium crisp apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), thinly sliced
09 - 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, sliced or shredded
10 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

# Method:

01 - Melt butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and salt. Cook, stirring frequently, for 15–18 minutes until onions are golden and tender. Add sugar halfway through if sweetness is desired. Remove from heat and set aside.
02 - Spread softened butter on one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer half the cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, apple slices, a pinch of black pepper, and remaining cheddar. Top with the other bread slices, buttered side facing out.
03 - Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes on each side, pressing gently, until bread is golden and cheese is melted. Lower heat if bread browns too quickly.
04 - Remove sandwiches from heat. Allow to cool for 1–2 minutes before slicing and serving warm.
